A brotherhood of Triana …
A brotherhood from Triana was the first to include “class numbers” of brothers.
It is the extinct brotherhood of Santa Ana de Triana, whose Rules were approved on 2 December 1754, rules found by María Soledad Garrido, second archivist of the Hermandad de la Soledad de Alcalá del Río and member of the Historical Research Group of this Corporation.
These Rules have been found in the Huntingtonston Library of San Marino, California (E.E.U.U.).
The document written on parchment with round Gothic script, consists of 62 folios and is bound in burgundy velvet with bronze trim on the two covers. Eight different scribes participated in its writing.
The Rules include in folio IV, in full page, the image of Santa Ana, the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus and in front of her, on folio V, one of the crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and Saint John. The document was received by the Huntingston Library in April 1953, as a legacy of Maria W.T.
The brotherhood of Santa Ana was founded around the middle of the 16th century in Triana.
Ortiz de Zúñiga describes it as Illustrious and speaks of its rigorous statute of cleanliness of Blood giving it much esteem and that its founders were King Alfonso X the Wise and Archbishop Don Remondo.
“It was the most authoritative and important in Triana. Its Rules were approved by writ of 2 December 1574, existing later additions of 1633, regarding the limitation on the number of Brotherhoods, and 1645, regarding certain precautions that should be observed in the information of cleanliness and legitimacy of blood when entering as a brother”.
The Brotherhood “it owned a hospital from which the brotherhood came to the Church of Señora Santa Ana. This hospital became extinct in the reduction of hospitals carried out in 1587″.
The very indiosyncrasy of the brotherhood led to its decline over time. This was helped by various historical vicissitudes that reduced the population of the city, and the very relaxation that in the matter of purity of blood came into being”.
Its Statutes established a limited number of brothers 30 secular and 10 clerics.
